STATION 9

  • A large crowd of people followed him, including women who were mourning and lamenting him. But turning to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and your children. Look, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the women without children, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed!’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’ For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

  • The women of Jerusalem mourn for Jesus and lament his suffering, but Jesus surprises them by saying they should mourn for themselves. For these women, and the other unbelieving Jews, a heavier judgment was yet to be laid.

  • Jesus, your suffering was so great and your wounded condition so pitiable. The people who looked on mourned for you, but you said the unbelieving heart was more pitiable than your broken body. Lord, please soften the hearts of our unbelieving family and friends, and please help us as we wrestle with our own unbelief. Amen.

  • Listening is a good way of letting people know we care. Really try to listen with your ears and your heart.
